Recently, the third press conference of Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) was held in Beijing. It has unveiled the candidates of Tiantan Award and opening and closing films, and introduced the progress of Beijing Film Panorama, as well as the preparatory work of Science & Technology Unit.
The selection of the 8th Beijing International Film Festival “Tiantan Award” will take place on April 15-22 in Beijing. Ten awards for the "Tiantan Award" will be selected. These awards include Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and so on. All these awards will be released at the closing ceremony of the 8th BJIFF.
The 8th Beijing International Film Festival has solicited the outstanding films produced after January 1, 2017 for the Tiantan Award. Up to now, the Selection Committee of Tiantan Award has received 659 films in total for the entries from six continents, 71 countries and regions. Among which, there are 532 international films (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and 127 domestic films in various genres and styles. After five rounds of selection, 15 films from 19 countries are nominated for “Tiantan Award”, including two Chinese films and 13 films from other countries. The shortlisted films include Hold Your Hands from China, Barefoot from Czech, Operation Red Sea from China, Dark Wind from India, Dog from France and so on.
The 8th Beijing International Film Festival is opening soon. After several rounds of selection, the Organizing Committee of BJIFF chooses A or B and Genghis Khan as the opening and closing film respectively from numerous excellent Chinese and international films. "Beijing Film Panorama" is scheduled to take place in 32 film institutions and institutions of higher education in Beijing from April 6th -22nd. Nearly 500 outstanding films with diverse themes and styles will be selected from across the world. The online ticket sales for “Beijing Film Panorama” have been opened, providing fans with numerous choices to select their favorite movies. Apart from watching movies, “Beijing Film Panorama” provides face-to-face communication and sharing opportunities for filmmakers, scholars and fans. Now, the Organizing Committee has confirmed nearly 80 workshops, salons and various functions before and after the film screening, including over 40 activities for Chinese films.
The BJIFF has always been dedicated to showcasing the aesthetic style of Chinese film industry. At this BJIFF, 4K restored version of The Horse Thief and Yellow Earth completed by the China Film Archive recently will be premiered. The famous director Tian Zhuangzhuang will attend the activity after screening The Horse Thief. Feng Hsu, a famous Hong Kong film producer, actress and one of filmmakers introduced at this Beijing Film Panorama Focus will bring seven films acted and produced by her to share her insights with film researchers and scholars. Among them, 4K restored version Red Dust will be premiered at Beijing Film Panorama. Woman-Demon-Human directed by Huang Shuqin, who is known as one of the fourth generation directors of China, is one of famous Chinese feminist films. Bangzi Melody is a recent work by literati director Zheng Dasheng. Both these two films borrow on traditional Chinese opera elements, but interpret the modernism from different perspectives. Thus, we especially arrange these two films to be screened together and invite Director Zheng Dasheng to share his insights with audience onsite.
Meanwhile, the BJIFF has always paid attention to the new forces of Chinese film.
This Beijing Film Panorama will be unveiled with its opening film Wangdrak’s Rain Boots, screen-written and directed by Lhapal Gyal, -- a representative of new-generation Chinese directors. The cast and crew, as well as young actor Du Jiang, who is the recommender for domestic films this year, will be present to interact with audiences. The Widowed Witch just won the Hivos Tiger Award 2018 at the 47th International Film Festival Rotterdam is an absurd comedy full of rural magic realism with its unique angle and distinctive style. Director Cai Chengjie and Producer & Photographer Jiao Feng will attend the post-screening event at this BJIFF.
Apart from bridging between fans and filmmakers, the Organizing Committee of the 8th Beijing International Film Festival is devoted to developing Beijing Film Panorama into an important platform between China and global film industry.
Director Ruben ?stlund, a winner of Golden Palm at Cannes Film Festival and a member of international jury of this Tiantan Award will attend the activity after screening his work The Square. At this Beijing Film Panorama, classical films from countries along “Belt and Road” including Czech, Poland and Serbia and also new Canadian films will be screened and also several activities will be held, enabling the cast and crew to meet with fans. This Beijing Film Panorama also displays the charm of VR art. The Organizing Committee specially sets a VR unit and invites award-winners at famous international film festivals worldwide and displays the latest VR works, to bring unprecedentedly refreshing immersion experience to fans.
In addition, this BJIFF firstly incorporates “Science & Technology Unit” into related activities. Under the theme of “Movies, add more luster to science and technology”, the Science & Technology Unit will focus on how special effects could promote science and technology popularization through screening special effect films such as dome films, IMAX, 4D films and multidimensional films, aiming to bring wonderful technological film experience to the public and provide a communication platform for special effect sector through showcasing special effect achievements worldwide. This Science & Technology Unit consists of five sections, including Special Effect Films Exhibition, science & technology popularization activity, excellent film selection, exhibition and academic forum.
Special Effect Films Exhibition will screen around 30 latest special effect films both at home and abroad at China Science and Technology Museum on April 5-May 6. Films to be aired are from ten countries such as China, USA, France and Canada, including 19 international films premiered in China, three films premiered globally, nine films premiered in Asia and seven Chinese films premiered domestically. On April 15, BBC IMAX film Oceans will unveil the “Science & Technology Unit” of BJIFF at China Science and Technology Museum.
Bian Jianguo also expressed that the excellent film selection section will rate the winners of the Best Film for Science & Technology Popularization, the Best Film for Creativity, the Best Film for Special Effect Design and the Best Films Recommended by Audiences. At the exhibition section, BJIFF will hold IMAX 3D laser technology roadshow, special effect film recommendation conference and movie watching and other activities. By capitalizing on excellent film resources, science & technology popularization section will hold “Science Film Fans Parent-Children Salon”, “Astronomy Class at Dome Theater” and “Screening Science & Technology Popularization on Campus” and other public welfare activities for the public and schools. Besides, the academic forum section will hold the forum on the development of special effect films, focusing on such topics as special effect cinema construction, special effect film technology and science & technology popularization of special effect films.
